Accupoints and Meridians
Massage Therapists study acupressure points on the skin which relate to the body's meridians. The Chinese have used acupressure for beauty treatments on the face, as well. These points are located in special pathways that carry human life energy called by both the Chinese and Japanese 'chi'. Each point is assigned a location or identification number to track its placement along the body. The therapist uses thumbs, fingers, palms, knuckles, the side of the hand, or a tool, to apply steady, stationary pressure for approximately 3 minutes. Pressure should be within the patient's tolerance. The tissue gives a pulse, which is felt, indicating circulation has increased. The patient is asked to take a deep breath and release, during the treatment. The blockage or pain area will be released.
Here are a few locations. Midway between the scapulae, there are three points each side of the backbone that release coughing, asthma, heart palpitations, night sweats, loss of memory and panic attacks. These points when worked achieve balance in the body's energy level. On the glutes of the sacrum are the points for the small and large intestine, urinary bladder, sciatica, lower abdominal, stiffness and pain in the lower back and relieve constipation and irregular urination. At the trigger point area of the neck lies another Yu (meridian) point for stomach, nausea, vomiting and anorexia. Massage Therapist's using these tools will relieve nagging pains in their clients. Trigger point therapy is also used in these areas for additional relief.
